This election is like a caricature of a bad election. And somehow it is reality! I just really hope the US isnt laughed at MORE around the world than we already are after this. If only Bernie had made it to the election, then I would have actually had someone I could support.

So in May I took a trip to the Middle East and Europe - can confirm we are the laughing stock of the world. I was asked by almost every new person I met:
“So..are you voting for Trump? Hahahahaha” or some variation of that followed by jokes about how comical it all is from the outside.

Hard to believe, I don’t think he is qualified. I mean the interviews on the Daily Show with some of his supporters outside a rally are insane. I don’t think a lot of those people are even informed or have a grip on reality or have ever travelled outside the USA. I’m not saying Hillary is the best thing to come along, but at least leaders around the world (besides Putin) are willing to work with her. Trump is a slash and burn businessman, he has gotten ahead but he has ruined a lot of people along the way. This is like Spinal Tap or Best in Show, the election version. He still says Mexico will pay for a wall, the Mexicans are like, WTF is he talking about, also Mexico hates their president. I think there is so much wrong with Trump and his supporters that there isn’t enough time to talk about it in our short attention span world, so he gets away with it. Most of them believe in fairy tales to begin with so it isn’t as hard to get those idiots to go along with it, plus they don’t like Hillary so they will burn the country down rather than vote for her.

I was really hoping that Jeb would get the nom. Been a registered Republican forever but haven’t been able to vote for one yet. I’d have voted for McCain in a heartbeat if he wasn’t a 70 something with a history of cancer and heart disease with Sarah fucking Palin as his second and I’d have voted for 2008 or 2016 Mitt too, but in 2012 he went full value-voter.

Alternatively depending on the country you could have responded with “Are you going to vote for... oh wait, you can’t vote!”
![]() 09/22/2016 at 13:15 |

I grew up in Minnesota and was maybe 14-16 when Ventura got elected. He did the same thing, trashed politicians and the media, said little of substance and got elected. Plus side - he didn’t really do much as he had no party support, did little to establish new policies, and he lasted one term. I suspect even if trump gets elected he won’t get anything accomplished except that he’ll have a bit of sway over the Supreme Court.
![]() 09/22/2016 at 13:15 |
|
That always happens, because campaigns are expensive and the bills don’t stop coming just because you’re out of the running. By shilling for the leader (who is still in fundraising mode) you can pay off those debts. Hell, it took Hillary 4 years too pay off the millions she owed from running in 2008.
That and the whole party unity blah-blah-blah.
![]() 09/22/2016 at 13:16 |

The weirdest part is that King supported Obama in 2008.
![]() 09/22/2016 at 13:16 |

As someone who has been to a Trump rally, the supporters you see on TV acting like nut jobs are very uncommon. There’s a reason they’re on TV. A 40 year old dentist with a Make America Great Again hat isn’t nearly as interesting to watch as someone who is completely insane.

Yeah, I imagine it’s a lot less scary when an autocratic demagogue with fascist ideas with a campaign built on bigotry and unconstitutional ideas combined with a healthy desire to commit war crimes is running to become President of some small, tin-pot nothing nation.
As opposed to the most militarily and economically powerful nation in the world.

I was absolutely willing to consider McCain until she came in. I wouldn’t call Obama a GWB extension. I’m not blindly enamored with his presidency but I think he’s tried to move the country in a positive direction, and has been largely stuck operating in Dubya’s framework due to Congress’ obstinacy and world events.
![]() 09/22/2016 at 13:38 |

I certainly hope you’re not from a place that voted for a brexit.
![]() 09/22/2016 at 13:40 |

Yes. He is smart! He knows what the angry and hate filled right want to hear. He knows how to pander to them all in such a magnificent way..... just to throw it all away towards the end so his best buddies The Clintons can get in the office. If anything, i’m glad he is the nominee. It shows me how actually dumb some people are, avoid them, and elude total chaos at least for 4 more years.
Lol Donald Trump is the absolute opposite of GOP values. They are good and honest values for the most part. I support many. But, people will actually vote for this guy because their absolute hate-filled hearts will rather do that than vote for an actual deserving candidate. Not the best candidate at all for sure, but better than the other whackos.
![]() 09/22/2016 at 13:42 |

you all shouldn’t be laughing at anyone. There are more Trumps out there than just Donald Trump. Take Norbert Hofer:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/eur…
His proposals are right from the Trump playbook. Muslims are evil, get us out of EU/NAFTA, wanting to do things he won’t have the power to do, etc.
creeping nationalism/nativism is a fast growing problem throughout the Western world. nevermind the looming “Brexit” disaster.
![]() 09/22/2016 at 13:56 |

Agreed. My dad is a Trump supporter and he’s a pretty chill guy. He loves the Donald to death (my dad is unfortunately very racist, xenophobic, hateful, you name it) but he’s peaceful about it. He sees Trump as the next Reagan and that Hillary is pretty much the next worst thing to Obama.
Which, as much as I disagree with pretty much everything my dad stands for, I have to give him lots of respect for showing his political support the same way I would.
![]() 09/22/2016 at 13:56 |

This guy nearly won in Austria:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/eur…
he’s basically Donald Trump w/o the bad hair or orange skin. We aren’t alone in this trend towards nativism/nationalism. This is also going on in Europe. Brexit was another example. If anyone over there is truly “laughing” at us, I’d say they should take the plank out of their own eye before pointing out the speck in ours.
![]() 09/22/2016 at 14:00 |

some people are buying into his nationalist/nativist message, others just despise Hillary enough to go with him.
![]() 09/22/2016 at 14:02 |

That article made me think of a Winston Churchill quote...
“Those who can win a war well can rarely make a good peace and those who could make a good peace would never have won the war.”
Bush was a military man from the start. We’ll gloss over the “winning the war” part for now, because it’s an ongoing thing, but it definitely is an insight to his train of thought.
![]() 09/22/2016 at 14:02 |

he wouldn’t be looked at so poorly had the Iraq invasion never happened. That created a mess which is going to be with us for a damn long time. Destabilizing the region created ISIL which is now destroying Syria and sending refugees fleeing.

Most aren’t.
Real Republicans, while i’m no fan of (neither of the Democratic ideology) seem to have many honest and wholesome views. None of which that clown seems to portray. That’s a damn shame for sure. All to a point where if I were Republican, I wouldn’t vote for that section of the ballot.
Still though, most Republicans will in spite of from what I can assume is actual Satan (Hillary) from what they say about her.

Iraq, like Vietnam, was a mistake. Going there in the first place is widely considered a mistake. I consider the greater error being the attempt to win a war while treading on eggshells.
If it’s worth going to war you owe it to everyone to finish it off.
![]() 09/22/2016 at 14:18 |

I see what you did there
![]() 09/22/2016 at 14:20 |

And btw I think your reworded reply makes my answer to it even more relevant. You can’t claim to have won while the echos are still bouncing around.
Even though it was a much larger conflict, I think I can draw a connection to WW2 here... Germany was utterly crushed. The extremists were either exterminated or fled. THEN the rebuilding starts.
Also, the Middle East is essentially without borders. It’s a religious region as much as a geographical one. So in keeping with “finishing the job you started”, it should have been recognized that it would spread from one country to another and that they would need to invade or co-operate with all the other countries besides Iraq once they’d started.
![]() 09/22/2016 at 14:24 |

I read stuff like this, seems like people block out the other stuff:
-
I finally found a Trump supporter – this morning when I went to buy coffee. (I noticed a Trump bumper sticker on his car.)
“Hi,” I said. “Noticed your Trump bumper sticker.”
“Yup,” he said, a bit defensively.
“I hope you don’t mind my asking, but I’m curious. Why are you supporting him?”
“I know he’s a little bit much,” said the Trump supporter. “But he’s a successful businessman. And we need a successful businessman as president.”
“How do you know he’s a successful businessman?” I asked.
“Because he’s made a fortune.”
“Has he really?” I asked.
“Of course. Forbes magazine says he’s worth four and a half billion.”
“That doesn’t mean he’s been a success,” I said.
“In my book it does,” said the Trump supporter.
“You know, in 1976, when Trump was just starting his career, he said he was worth about $200 million,” I said. “Most of that was from his father.”
“That just proves my point,” said the Trump supporter. “He turned that $200 million into four and a half billion. Brilliant man.“
“But if he had just put that $200 million into an index fund and reinvested the dividends, he’d be worth twelve billion today,” I said.
The Trump supporter went silent.
“And he got about $850 million in tax subsidies, just in New York alone,” I said.
More silence.
“He’s not a businessman,” I said. “He’s a con man. “Hope you enjoy your coffee.”
